My Dental Chart

What:

A mobile app designed for the end users that lets them track their dental health. Not tied to any medical service provider, this app’s motto is to provide patients with a tool that they can use to log and manage their dental health.

Problem Definition:

People are not very conversant with teeth number, surfaces and the type of procedures done on their teeth. It is surprising how little we know about our teeth. How many people know how many fillings they have had? How many are able to correctly point out the teeth that have root canals done. Over time, if you have seen different dentists, then it is difficult to remember which doctor worked on which teeth. As a patient, you do get your medical charts on request, but it is difficult to read, understand and record all about your dental health, for someone who is not in the medical profession.

Lack of knowledge about your own teeth leads to poor hygiene, management and decision making.

We don’t have a good way to record the changes happening in our mouth. Tooth aches, tooth sensitivity, gum inflammations. We rely on our memory to know what caused a certain reaction in our mouths, when that happened and what was done to take care of it.

Solution:

MyDentalChart is an app that aims to make dental record keeping easier.

App features:

  1. Visual(clickable) representation of your mouth. You should be able click on any tooth to view its history.
  2. Click any tooth to add procedure details.
  3. Click on any tooth to attach photos and videos.
  4. Record cleaning events and Store x rays as photos.
  5. Notifications for adding cleaning reminders.
  6. View the calendar with cleaning/treatment dates marked.

App Workflow:

Login: allow users to use google/email to login

Homescreen:

  • Click to view dental chart.
  • Profile pic ( add personal details, information about current dentist, storing data in icloud).
  • Flossing history – Setup reminders for flossing.
  • Cleaning appointment reminder.
  • Reports
    • View all treatments done in the last x years
    • View all doctors visited

Add record of treatment / proposed treatment plan for individual teeth: Clicking on any teeth will allow users to view the dental history so far. It will also allow them to add new treatment details and add proposed treatment plans. There will be support to include multiple treatment plans to be able to compare and contrast between recommendations from different doctors.

Add record of treatment / proposed treatment for entire mouth: For issues that concern all teeth like gingivitis or braces, the user should be able to add a record corresponding all the teeth.

What about HIPAA ( Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act):

Since this app is strictly for personal use and does not connect to any external medical services, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations generally do not apply. HIPAA primarily governs how covered entities(like healthcare providers, health plans, and their business associates) handle protected health information (PHI).

Since this app:

  1. Does not interface with medical providers or systems (e.g., no integration with electronic health records).
  2. Stores data locally or privately in the user’s control (e.g., on their device or private iCloud).
  3. Is designed for individual use by the user rather than for medical professionals or organizations to manage patient data it is outside the scope of HIPAA.
